Getting ‘Hooked’ on the Lower South Coast
The KwaZulu-Natal Lower South Coast offers some of the best fishing grounds for bottom and game fishing in South Africa.
Getting Started – Fishing from the rocks and the sandy shoreline
Many people fish from the rocks and shoreline, the most popular spot being Orange Rocks in Uvongo or Margate Fishing Pier where one can park easily, at no cost, safely.
All you need is the fishing rod, tackle, bait and a license to fish, obtainable from any SA Post Office on the South Coast.
There are a number of highly specialised retailers of branded, quality fishing tackle.
Deep Sea Fishing Charters
Another low cost option is to join several other anglers on a large purpose made fishing boat which provides all the necessary gear including life jackets. Prices vary and there are options of half day or full day deep sea fishing trips.
Other options are to buy your own boat, or buy a boat and share the cost of the purchase with another likeminded person.
Top of the range is Must-Byt Fishing Charters owned by Mike Schneider, who is well-known on the Lower South Coast.
The secret of his success is his knowledge of local waters, specialising and focussing upon a specific fish type and achieving that objective.
And that is not all…
Mike has several boats, all-purpose built for the job. One such boat is the Tomcat 19 which has 2 x Honda 80hp four stroke outboard engines and is fully equipped with:
- Safety and emergency gear
- Navigational and fishing aids plus
- Communication facilities
The Tomcat 19 carries four fishermen, the skipper and one crew.
One of Mike’s customers caught an unusual blue marlin weighing 194kg, yellowfin tuna, Dorado and a 250kg Zambezi shark – all on the same trip.
This option allows you to fish in exclusivity. Please refer to www.mustbytfishingcharters.co.za for more information and various options.
It’s all about location and safety
Most people buy their own boats and fit them out with either Suzuki, Honda or Yamaha four stroke outboard engines – you need two engines for safety and regulations.
The best ski boat launch facility on the KZN Lower South Coast is Sonny Evans small boat harbour in Shelly Beach. It is home of Shelly Beach Ski Boat Club, with its club facilities, a concrete slipway, control tower, a fully equipped NSRI base and a large car park where all the fishing charter businesses operate from.
The club is open to the public, has a swimming pool, serves excellent food, incredible sea views and family friendly.
Want to obtain your ski boat skippers ticket?
You need to complete a theoretical and practical course to obtain your certification.
The theory side includes navigation, meteorology, rules of the road, safety equipment and communication (29 MHz, VHF). There are a number of certified organisations and individuals that provide these courses and you sure to find one closest to your location.
For the practical side, on the Lower South Coast, the examiner for ski boat skipper’s tickets conducts the practical side of the examination from this base.
There are large sponsored prizes to be won and the events draw many people throughout South Africa.
